The DPW is responsible for such services as rubbish pickup for both residential and commercial, tree trimming, ditch enclosure and cleaning, road grading and striping, street repair and cleaning, and the city composting program. The department also oversees the city recycling program--details of which can be obtained by calling the office. Any tree on the city easement (between the sidewalk and the street) shall be maintained (trimming/removal) by the City of Taylor. If you have any questions or concerns regarding tree trimming or tree removal on the city easement, please contact the department of Public Works at (734) 374-1373. Changes in service this holiday season: Compost pickup will be extended through December 4, 2009. (Last pickup of the season.) Rubbish/compost will be one day later after Thanksgiving. The Taylor Hills Transfer Station and Compost Site will be closed on Thanksgiving (November 26) and open November 27 and 28 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Seasonal Reminders Snow Removal City ordinances state that parking on streets in Taylor is prohibited when a snow emergency is declared. In the event of a snow emergency, please tune to local television and radio stations. Keep all vehicles off the street for plowing. Neighborhoods will be plowed in conjunction with rubbish routes. Smaller trucks will clear the path of those living near a dead end or a cul-de-sac. All major and secondary roads must be plowed first and kept open for police runs, fire and safety rescues, schools and public safety. Major roads such as Wick, Goddard, Pardee and Beech Daly are city streets and will be plowed by city crews. Wayne County is responsible for plowing the following roads: Telegraph, Eureka, Northline, Ecorse and the city limit roads of Van Born, Pennsylvania, Allen, Pelham and Inkster. Placing Trash During Winter Plowing and piling snow on easements can make the placing of trash materials difficult for residents. Residents are encouraged to clean a portion of their easement for the placement of trash and containers. This will minimize the inconvenience of trash pickup and damage to the containers during the plowing of city streets. Department of Public Works personnel ask residents not to place trash in the street or behind the mounds of piled snow. Trash collection will be made each week according to the area's schedule, unless a holiday falls on or before your regular pickup day. Trash collection will be one day late during the weeks of Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Compost pickup ends the first week of December and resumes the first week of March. There is a Christmas tree pickup from the last week of December through the second week of January. Trees placed curbside after the second week of January will not be picked up and must be taken tot he Transfer Station. (Christmas trees are considered regular trash and will not be picked up by a compost truck due to the possibility of contaminations.) The Taylor Hills Transfer Station and Compost Site is located at 16300 Racho Road. Winter hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
