Dave Gorgon, former City of Taylor employee and a member of several organizations in the community, was appointed to fill a City Council vacancy last night (August 15).
Gorgon fills the vacancy left by the resignation of former City Council Chairperson Linda Parker-Craig last month. In an earlier meeting, Angela Croft, the former Council Pro Tem, was elevated to the council chair and Alex Garza was named the new pro tem. Gorgon's appointment, by a 5-1 vote, competes the seven-member City Council, which will remain intact until the November General Election.
Gorgon is a popular figure in the City. The former public information officer for the City, he is an avid photographer who hosts the popular "Heritage Park Photo of the Day" page on Facebook. He's a member of the City's Historical Commission, and is on the board of directors for the Downriver Fish & Loaves Food Pantry and The Information Center. He also handles all of the communications work for the Junior League World Series.
Gorgon's City Council appointment is the second of this particular four-year term. Earlier this year, John "Jack" Myers was appointed to replace Linda Roberts. Neither Gorgon or Myers are running for re-election in November.
The top 14 finishers during the August primary are on to the general election ballot. The top vote-getter was incumbent City Council Pro Tem Alex Garza, who finished with 2,068 votes. Incumbent Councilmen Tim Woolley (1,989) and Charley Johnson (1,982) finished in second and third place, respectively. City Council Chairperson Angela Croft was fourth (1,744), followed by Caroline Patts (fifth, 1,642), incumbent Councilman Dan Bzura (sixth, 1,598) and Herman Ramik (seventh, 1,3.44). Also qualifying for the November election were David Mellert (1,140); Tina Daniels (1,091); Lindsey Rose (1,090); John Edwards (983); Justin Mordarski (975); William McDonald (777); and Ken Williams (706).
The General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2017. The top seven voter-getters will make up the new City Council. In November. Incumbent Edward Bourassa will face challenger Jean Smith for Treasurer.
Clerk Cindy Bower and Mayor Rick Sollars are each unopposed in 2017.
